The HP Omen is a stylish gaming computer with potent performance and capacity for expansion. Yet with a mushy touchpad and a webcam that falls short of flagship standards, there is room for improvement.
The most recent Omen 16 is a fantastic addition to HP’s Omen line of excellent gaming laptops. This model has up to an Nvidia GeForce RTX 1070 and Intel Core i7 CPUs, which can handle almost any game, even on this razor-sharp Quad HD display. The cooling system contributes to this and is very effective at moving air, albeit at full power it can be somewhat noisy.
Although it isn’t a very light or thin laptop, it is elegant, with a mostly plain, all-black design. This makes it a laptop you can use without drawing too much notice when out in public.

The gaming powerhouse is now more powerful than ever thanks to its Intel Core i7-7700HQ, GeForce GTX 1070, and 8 GB of RAM configuration.
Pros
- Fairly portable compared to some competitors
- Good IPS screen with G-Sync and 75Hz refresh rate
- The screen doesn’t use PWM across all brightness levels
- Effective and stable cooling solution (with some small exceptions)
- Decent battery life for a 17-inch gaming laptop
The keyboard, on the other hand, is extremely robust and appears to have metal below supporting it. As a result, even when put under a lot of strain, it does not bend. The bottom cover of the notebook mirrors the X-design of the lid and is partially coated with a highly rough non-slip material. The rear also contains additional holes for increased airflow. Thin rubber strips support the laptop itself.
Due to a single repair aperture at the bottom, HP guarantees flawless maintenance capabilities. But, what they actually mean is that in order to access the internals, the complete bottom cover must be removed. The battery cannot be changed by the user.
Nvidia G-Sync is supported by the 17.3-inch matte 120 Hz IPS display. As Optimus and G-Sync are incompatible, the Omen 17 does not support it.
